Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – Moanin’

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Moanin’

This is one of my favorite albums. Features Lee Morgan on trumpet, one of my favorite musicians of all time. He comes in like a freight train on the title track and doesn’t let up. Other players on this album are, Benny Golson on tenor sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and, of course, Art Blakey on drums.

Title Track Sample:

This album is responsible for may rather large collection of both Art Blakey and Lee Morgan recordings.

I believe that this is what people would refer to as Hard Bop a fusion of Bebop, Gospel and R&B, which I can sort of see, although, to my musical nonsensibilities, it just swings like crazy. Whatever you call it, it sounds fantastic.

If you like this album, you should check out Lee Morgan’s Cornbread album.

Sound Quality: 8/10
Favorite Scale: 9/10
