Swedish Punch
Swedish Punch is another hard to get alcohol in Countries where alcohol is a government monopoly, like Cuba, North Korea, the former U.S.S.R., and Canada. In these evil dictatorships, and Canada, government committee determines the tastes of the people. This leads to weird aberrations, like vodka only, no alcohol at all, or, in the case of Canada, a hundred varieties of mediocre scotch and no Swedish Punch. To such mandarins, variety equals the same stuff with different brand names.
Swedish Punch is kind of like rum as made by the Coca-Cola company. Its a rum based liquor with a smoky flavor. This smoky flavor comes from Batavia Arak, which is a distillate of fermented sugar cane juice and/or coconut and fermented Javanese red rice. Arrack is made in Indonesia, and can be purchased in some provinces of Canada and possibly the PDRK.
To make Swedish Punch just combine the following:
2 parts Arack
3 parts dark rum
5 parts sugar water
If you are going to drink it straight you might want to add some lemon, however, if you are using it as a mix, better to hold off and see what the mix calls for.
I’m not sure how this compares to the commercial products like Cederlund’s, Carlshamn’s or Gronstedt, but it should suffice for use in mixed drink recipes.
