The Nanny Web
If you are worried about government censorship you should stop reading now. It seems the world is so used to censorship that in the absence of government censorship we still find ways to censor ourselves and our fellow citizens.
Case in point, some students make a crappy satirical video, post it on YouTube.com and then there is an outcry and before you can type “youtube sucks” they removed the “offensive material”. There always seems to be an outcry with any satirical material because, as far as I can tell, something like 20-30% of people have no sense of humour whatsoever.
Here is a good blog entry with a pointer to the deeply disturbing video in question. Caroline Hunt’s Blog
Here is a link to a BBC article about the removal and the general wringing of hands and whining that caused YouTube to ditch the content.
Contrast this with other material on YouTube that they and their Google masters don’t think worthy of censorship:
Someone’s son getting blown up by a dickhead, sorry, “freedom fighter”
Some sort of crazy white supremest rock video.
I guess everyone has their own standards of what is in good taste and what isn’t. As you can see mine differs somewhat from that of the corporate bozos at YouTube. (Google rocks though guys, please don’t blacklist my site because I said you suck).
